Course Overview
This course is for teachers of primary, secondary and adult students.Designed to give practising teachers the opportunity to explore new ideas and methodologies in teaching English while at the same time increasing their own proficiency in the language. It is the aim of the school that those teachers who attend the course return to their schools with a range of practical ideas for the classroom and the renewed enthusiasm for their work.
The two-week teacher training programme offers 50 hours of practical training in the most up to date teaching techniques while also helping participants to improve their own language skills. Participants explore a wide range of topics including teaching methodology, exploiting and adapting materials,, the increased role of technology in the language classroom, classrooom management and approaches and activities for teaching all language areas and skills, in addition to teaching observation sessions followed by feedback meetings. Classes on Irish history, culture and the Irish educational system in addition to a full social and activity programme also form part of this intensive and dynamic course.
Description
Daily modules on teaching methodology cover a wide spectrum beginning with the four main language skills of reading, writting, listening and speaking. Other areas covered include grammar, vocabulary acquisition, pronuniation and the role of error and learner motivation.
Consideration is also given to explotation of published teaching materials and the adaptation of authentic materials ages and ability levels.
In addition teaching observation sessions provide an opportunity for the teachers to see fello professionals at work in the classroom and share their observations in the feedback sessions with follow.
Throught the course the college provides teachers with extensive training with a view to improving their own language skills and profiency. Discussions, debates and other communicative activities are widely used to develop oral fluency and opportunities for practical use of the language are maximised.
Seminars are held twice weekly on the subject of Irish history and culture for secondary school teachers and drama/games for primary level teachers. There can be tailored to suit the needs of the group.
